This page gives one ardent music fan's impressions to help guide friends and strangers. As inevitably happens, success has somewhat corrupted the public's impression of SXSW, with local word-of-mouth focusing on the free day parties and major media reporting focusing on performances by big-name bands like Metallica or R.E.M. Although it is great to see a big-name band in concert, and free parties are nice, SXSW is about the nighttime showcases; about the cutting edge, the frontier of rock music; about finding and discovering bands about which you otherwise would never hear and might never hear from again; and about hearing music from the true patriots of rock and roll: independent and yet amazingly-talented musical artists. You might disagree, but you don't have The Power to Change this web site.
